Spring 2009 Update

Sunday, March 15, 2009 @ 9:52pm

This semester has been a whirlwind of activity so far, and so much has been happening that its been hard to have a separate news update for every event.  So, here is a quick run down of what the chapter has been up this semester (so far).

Pikes held a brand new philanthropic event on February 27th: Capture the Flag.  The premise of the event was simple - the house of every fraternity and sorority that participated was made base to their flag.  It was the job of every other organization to retrieve those flags, and bring them to a central location on SJSU campus where Pike referees kept score.  The flags could be guarded via whatever means the team preferred, with many using water balloons and water guns to defend their territory.  The only requirement to play was a t-shirt made specially for the event, which is where all of the fundraised dollars were generated.  The event was a tremendous success, with the fraternity actually running out of shirts and raising nearly $1,000.  Needless to say, we expect this first-time event to grow over the coming semesters into something very special and unique to our chapter.

The following day was our annual Founder's Day Luncheon, again held at Rob Sanchez's Melting Pot in San Mateo.  We had another great turn out this year of both older and newer alumnus members, and greatly appreciate everyone who made it out and made a donation to the chapter's general fund.  As these events grow every year, they become even more fun, and we hope to see you at the next one!

The following weekend Pikes hosted their annual Garnet and Gold Football tournament, which has become a campus tradition of it's own.  This year nineteen teams participated, more than doubling the nine from the first tournament three years ago.  The event has gotten so big that we can no longer manage with public parks, and instead used Independence High School's fields and had the tournament spread across two days in order accommodate all of the games.  The event raised over $1,300 this year, and we look forward to what the future holds.

This past weekend found Pike winning competitions left and right instead of hosting them.  On Thursday, Delta Pi chapter won both the Open Campus and IFC League championships in dodgeball, just like last Spring.  Later that night, the Chapter also took 1st place in Kappa Delta Sorority's Shamrock Showcase dance competition with a Ghostbuster themed performance, a video of which follows.  This was the second year in a row Pikes took top honors in this competition, and hope to continue on.  Finally, Saturday was Alpha Phi Sorority's yearly volleyball tournament, which they call Phi Ball.  Our chapter established something of a dynasty this time around by winning the tournament for the 3rd straight year.

As you can see from just this handful of events so far this Spring, Delta Pi is continue its traditions of greatness.  We look forward to what the rest of this semester holds, including initiating the Xi pledge class, winning even more events, and having the best house on campus; all while striving toward even loftier goals and continuing to grow scholars, leaders, athletes and gentlemen in the spirit of phi phi kappa alpha.

And, as a reminder, Pat's Run is coming up on April 27.  Our chapter has been a major part of this event since its inception, and will be running Mile Marker 1 as always.  If you want to run with the Pikes (even if you're not one!), information about the team can be found here.  It is a great event for a great cause.

Twice Featured in the Latest Shield & Diamond

Friday, January 2, 2009 @ 4:4pm

The Winter issue of Pi Kappa Alpha quarterly magazine was recently published, and our chapter was highlighted with not one, but two featured stories.  The first discusses this year's alumni golf tournament, which has become a rather major event for us in the last few years and continues to grow.  The other is about our participation in The Pat Tillman Race, which we support every Spring.

DELTA PI ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
San Jose State University

The fourth Annual Peter Martin Golf Classic took place on June 28 with 51 golfers at Spring Valley Golf Course. Rea Stelmach ’06, who was sponsored by Peter’s mom Gretchen, was this year’s Peter Martin Loyalty Award winner. The first place trophy was awarded to Eric Arnold ’83 and Stan Vuckovich ‘83, second place went to Pat McCann (Nebraska-Omaha, Delta Chi ’78) and Mark Foster (Lehigh, Gamma Lambda ’78) and third place was given to Todd Beardsley ’85, Drew Brown ’83 and Brad Mountz ’83. Austin Moss ’06 was the closest to the pin champ and Ryan Wong ’02 blasted a 343 yard tee shot to win the longest drive on the 17th hole. Kurt Carrasquilla ’89 was the tournament chair and Sean Stanton ’87, along with Chapter President Dustin Brunzlick ’05 and several actives did an outstanding job coordinating the barbeque and refreshments that immediately followed at the Pike house. Several Pikes traveled 100+ miles to attend this growing event! For those of you who were not able to join us this year, it is our hope that you will be able to attend the tournament next year on June 27, 2009. For more information, please contact Alumni Association President Kurt Carrasquilla at kurt.f.carrasquilla@smithbarney.com.

Delta Pi (San Jose State)
Active chapter size: 75; pledges: 21. The chapter sent two men to the 2008 International Convention.

Pat Tillman was a Summa Cum Laude graduate from Arizona State University in 1998 as well as the Pac 10 Defensive Player of the year. The Arizona Cardinals drafted him in the seventh round and even though many questioned his ability to make the opening-day roster, he soon became the team’s starting safety. In 2000, he broke the franchise record for tackles with 224. Rather than cashing in on his success in 2002, he turned down a multi million dollar contract to serve his country in an elite Army Ranger Unit, and unfortunately died in 2004 while serving his country in Eastern Afghanistan.

The Pat Tillman Foundation supports developing tomorrow’s leaders today with their Leadership Through Action program at Arizona State University. May 3rd, 2008 marked the Third Annual Pat’s Run held at Leland High School in San Jose, California. Approximately 6,000 people were in attendance and the Delta Pi Pikes were responsible for the first mile marker of the 4.2 mile race, an honor they have held each year since its inception. Kurt Carrasquilla ’89 worked with Chapter President Dustin Brunzlick ’05 and Patrick McCauley ’06 to coordinate the volunteering effort. The Pikes had 40 brothers supporting the 1st mile marker as well as 10 active and alumni racers.

Special congratulations to John Van Metre ’01 who placed 19th out of 3,317 runners and covered the 4.2 mile course in 23:22 minutes. In the Super Clydesdales division, Daniel Atilano ’03 placed third with a time of 36:18 minutes.

San Jose Race Director Erin Dando, was very complimentary of the Delta Pi Pikes for their continued support each year. The Foundation is looking forward to seeing the chapter out again for a fourth year in 2009!

Flag Football Perfect Season

Saturday, November 1, 2008 @ 5:49pm

Yesterday, Pi Kappa Alpha bested Sigma Alpha Epsilon in the IFC Flag Football championship game to win the first IFC sports title of the academic year.  After taking second the last two years to Delta Upsilon, the Pikes were eager to prove themselves on the field, shutting down SAE in a 14-0 win.

This also marks the third consecutive season where Pi Kappa Alpha went undefeated to the final game.  Though our offense performed well, the real story for the team this year was on the defensive side of the ball.  In seven games, the defense allowed only 18 points to be scored, and no point-after conversions to be made - resulting in 4 shutouts (including the championship).  The defense also accounted for 16 points scored (5 safeties and 1 interception for a touchdown).  The scores for each game are as follows:

Regular Season:
win v. Sigma Pi (12-6)
win v. Sigma Alpha Epsilon (13-6)
win v. Kappa Sigma (24-0)
win v. Theta Chi (37-0)
win v. Sigma Chi (18-0)

Playoffs:
win v. Delta Upsilon (13-6)
win v. Sigma Alpha Epsilon (14-0)

Congratulations to the entire team on a victory well earned!

In related news, Pike Greg Krupka (Fall '06) also won the Intramural Pass, Punt, & Kick contest.

Winning Big at Delta Gamma's Anchor Splash

Saturday, October 25, 2008 @ 11:13pm

Pikes took home a number of top honors at this years Anchor Splash.  For those not familiar, Anchor Splash is Delta Gamma Sorority's annual Philanthropic fundraiser, supporting Service For Sight.  Service For Sight funds a number of programs aimed at assisting the blind and visually challenged.  Anchor Splash is a week long event, and this year raised over $7000!

This year, Pi Kappa Alpha took home the three major competitions, by scoring first in the "Lip Sync or Swim" lip sync dance/skit competition, first in the Synchronized Swimming event, and first in the more athletically focused swimming relays.  We also received second place in the Most Beautiful Eyes fundraiser.  Despite this, we were only awarded with second place overall recognition, but that means we will just have to do it again (and even better) next year.

We have also uploaded some of the performances, so check out the Videos Page for footage of all that.  Thanks to Delta Gamma  and everyone else who participated and helped with this great event.

SJSU Pikes Win Big at International Conference

Saturday, August 23, 2008 @ 3:56pm

Delta Pi chapter brought back several big awards a this summer's International Conference.  Every year, Pi Kappa Alpha members from every chapter meet in Memphis, where our headquarters are located, to discuss the upcoming year and recognize the best of themselves.  This time around, SJSU Pikes brought back their second consecutive Chapter Excellence Award as well the the 20/50 membership award.

The Chapter Excellence Award recognizes the top 20% of Pike chapters (out of over 210), and is one of the most coveted awards given out.

The 20/50 membership award recognizes chapters that initiated at least 20 new men in the previous year, as well as growing their overall membership total by at least 50%.

The chapter is not resting on its laurels, and already has next year in its sights.

Mu Pledge Class Initiated

Saturday, April 19, 2008 @ 10:33pm

The thirteen men of Pi Kappa Alpha, Delta Pi Chapter's Mu Pledge Class (Spring '08) have been initiated.  This was a fun and trying semester for both the pledging members and actives of the Fraternity, and we are all very pleased to accept these men into our ranks.

This marks our chapter's first time initiating every man invited to pledge at the beginning of a semester since Spring '04, and speaks well to both the high quality of these men, and the commitment they show to Pi Kappa Alpha.  This was our largest Spring initiation since our re-founding, besting last Spring's ten.  Combined with with last Fall's 24, Delta Pi successfully brought 37 of the best men on campus into the Pike fold.

Congratulations to all the men of the Mu Pledge Class on achieving this mile stone! They are:
Chris Arkley
Mike Bedford
Jeremy Leal
Matthew Logan
Collin McDonough
John Miranda
Steve Moore
Ryan O'Rourke
Eddie Parish
Alex Sternberg
Kevin Vasquez
Chad Wallace
Matt Wondolowski

Pikes Win Shamrock Showcase 2008

Wednesday, April 9, 2008 @ 11:47pm

Delta Pi Chapter took home the gold in Shamrock Showcase this year.  We came in a close second last year, and were definitely in it to win this time around.  The dance was choreographed by B.J. Conception and Ernie Molieri, and the entire team did an amazing job.  Congratulations to everyone involved.  Catch a video of the performance below.

Pike Active GPA #1 in IFC

Thursday, February 28, 2008 @ 9:12am

The official grade rankings were recently released and SJSU Pikes found themselves holding another high honor. Our actives achieved the highest grade point average of any of the IFC fraternities in the Fall 2007 semester, coming together to get a 2.89.

On top of this, our combined GPA (the active tally does not include pledges) was a 2.76, above the all men's average at San Jose State and ranking 3rd in the IFC.

In Fall 2006, Pikes had slipped and earned its lowest GPA in the chapter's five years since re-chartering, when John LoFranco (Spring '06) stepped in and rewrote the chapter's entire scholarship program. Since then, Pikes academic standards have been steadily improving to this, our best GPA ever. Congratulations to all the brothers for working so hard to maintain Pi Kappa Alpha's reputation inside as well as outside of the class room. Keep up the great work.

Pikes Win Campus Dodgeball Tournament.... Twice!

Friday, February 22, 2008 @ 6:31pm

SJSU Pikes took away two campus sports championships today.

In our usual dramatic fashion, Pikes won both the IFC and Open-Campus Leagues.

The IFC league team was undefeated going into the semifinal round, but unfortunately lost and had to work its way back through the loser bracket.  In back-to-back-to-back games, the team defeated Kappa Sigma, and then two consecutive matches against Delta Upsilon.  the first of those two, Pikes won handily in four games to one, but the second (Championship Match) went to the very final game of seven.  The match ended in a dramatic one-on-one show down, with Ryan Black (Fall '07) taking home the final victory.

The Open-League team went undefated through the entire tournament and took home the championship with much less excitement.  But, we'll take it.

Congratulations to the players on both teams.

Dear brothers,

First and foremost, we at the Delta Pi Chapter hope that you and your families had a safe and happy holiday season.
Since being re-chartered in 2002, the Delta Pi Chapter has swept the San Jose State campus by initiating scholars, leaders, athletes, and above all, gentlemen. This past year, in recognition of its outstanding work, both on campus and with the community, the chapter was awarded one of the Fraternity’s highest honors, an Excellence Award.
One thing that this chapter has been continuing to do is allow local brothers and alumni to know what we are doing and how they can reunite with the men that they shared so many memories with. The active chapter would like to invite you and your family, and friends to a day of celebration of the founding of our International Fraternity. This year the Delta Pi Chapter will be hosting a Founder’s Day Celebration on Saturday March 1st, 2008 from 11am-3pm at the The Melting Pot in San Mateo. Delta Pi featured in Shield & Diamond for Pat's Run

Wednesday, January 2, 2008 @ 4:19pm

Our chapter was featured in the Winter 2007 issue of the Shield & Diamond (Pi Kappa Alpha's quaterly magazine). This past semester, the Pikes helped to run the 2nd annual Pat's Run. Here is the text of the article:

Delta Pi (San Jose State) Pikes Run For Pat Tillman Foundation

"Pat Tillman graduated Summa Cum Laude from Arizona State University in 1998, and went on to win the Pac 10 Defensive Player of the Year as a linebacker. The Arizona Cardinals drafted him in the 7th round that following year. Even though many people questioned his ability to make the opening-day roster, he soon became the team’s starting safety and broke the franchise record for tackles in 2000 with 224. In 2002, he turned down a multi-million dollar contract to serve his country in an elite Army Ranger Unit and died in 2004 while serving his country in Eastern Afghanistan.

After his death, the Pat Tillman Foundation was born and raises money to assist in developing tomorrow’s leaders today. April 29,
2007 marked the 2nd Annual Pat’s Run held at Leland High School in San Jose, California. Approximately 6,000 people attended thisyear’s event with the Delta Pi Pikes showing up in force. The Pikes were responsible for the 1st mile marker of the 4.2 mile race and had a banner spanning across the street for all to see. Kurt Carrasquilla ’89 and Jad Mogannam ’04 coordinated this year’s Pi Kappa Alpha volunteering effort. They had 30 brothers supporting the 1st mile marker and 11 runners including some alumni.

John Van Metre ’01 was the top finishing Pike covering the 4.2 mile course in 27:21 minutes. An impressive note was that after Stan Vuchovich ’82 finished the race he went on to score three goals that afternoon for the competitive men’s soccer team he plays on.

Alex Garwood, Executive Director of the Pat Tillman Foundation, greatly appreciated the Pikes getting behind the race as well as the Foundation."

Way to go Pikes!
